New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM) seeks a distinguished leader in the field of rehabilitation medicine to occupy this newly endowed chair ('The Hinterbuchner Chair') The SOM's Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has 12 full-time faculty members, primarily based at Metropolitan Hospital Center in New York City. The department actively carries out NYMC medical student teaching and has a fully ACGME-accredited residency program. The department chair will mentor the research activities of students, residents and early-phase faculty members, leading to publication of scholarly works and to extramurally funded grants & contracts. The individual holding this endowed chair will be an M.D. or an M.D./Ph.D. In accordance with the specifications of the endowment, we seek a "clinician, teacher, researcher and administrator as the Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation ???[who will assure] the Department's participation in the required curriculum for medical students and leading a serious research effort that will also engage the departmental faculty???[so] that the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation shall continue to thrive into the future as a leader in the field of Rehabilitation Medicine." We seek, if possible, a candidate with a track record in research. Funding from the NIH's National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (NCMRR) and/or similar agencies (such as the US Department of Defense and/or the Veterans Administration Health System, etc) is highly desirable. Areas of the candidate's research focus might include topics such as spinal cord injury, regenerative medicine, neuro-engineering, stroke, traumatic brain injury, neuro-plasticity, or motor/cognitive dysfunction. The endowed chair will proactively build programmatic bridges from the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department to other NYMC academic units, affiliated healthcare systems & hospitals, research centers & institutes and other extramural partners & research networks. Research collaborations are encouraged among the SOM departments, including clinical departments (i.e., Neurology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Medicine) and basic science departments (i.e., Pharmacology, Cell Biology, Physiology).
