When do job hunters job hunt? That was the questions we asked ourselves as we poured over our 2010 job board statistics. It’s long been reported on but now the job search world has some hard facts to prove the theory. Job hunting is a seasonal activity with ups and downs, twists and turns. AllCountyJobs.com, a job board network that operates dozens of local and niche employment sites has released data that details the level of job hunting activity on its top 12 sites from last year. The chart represents the number of job views by month. ‘Job views’ are defined as the number of times a job description is viewed by a job seeker. Here are the key takeaways of the report; * January - May is when the bulk of activity occurs* May represents the height of the job hunting season, no doubt due to the influx of graduates * Job hunting activity drops 50% during the summer months of June - August * Fall is when the “second-half” of the job hunting season begins * December is not as slow as people think * The drop in April is probably due to holidays and spring vacations So what can we learn from this? Well, for one thing the slow summer period indicates you will have much less competition from other job hunters so you have a better chance of standing out. You may want to step up you activity during these months. And be aware that May means a slew of high school and college grads entering the market. As the start of the 2011 job hunting season approaches, we wish you well in your search for work. Happy hunting everyone! |
