POSITION TITLE: Facilities Maintenance Mechanic


The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine (JAX-GM) has an immediate opening for a motivated, "Jack-of-all-trades" to provide overall maintenance support for the building. The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic position is responsible for a variety of related tasks on building envelopes and interiors. Assignments include carpentry, masonry, painting, siding, flooring, lock installation & repair, windows, doors, roofing, furniture repair & installation, dry wall, ceilings, minor electrical, lighting, plumbing and other related tasks pertaining to general building maintenance.


Performs corrective & preventative maintenance on building envelopes, interiors, furniture
Works with local contractors, obtaining estimates, monitoring job performance and safety
Advises management of known maintenance deficiencies and provides practical solutions for remediation

Other general maintenance duties as assigned

Provides training and mentoring to others in the maintenance of building envelopes, interiors, furniture and its components
Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices

Provides general clean up, housekeeping, and maintenance of mechanical spaces

Utilizes CMMS to track and preventive and corrective maintenance tasks and create work orders

Provide detailed written and oral reports/presentations on building envelopes, interiors, furniture and daily pass down logs for internal use along

Develops new and improves existing SOPs to effectively document processes and procedures


Conduct themselves in a professional and personal manner (attendance, attire, verbal and written communication)

Ability to solves problems and troubleshoots issues in a timely manner
Maintain a zero personal injury record and immediately report and safety incidents to supervisor

Promotes lean processes and 5S activities
Work area and tools/equipment are maintained in a clean, orderly fashion and free of safety hazards
Completion of corrective and preventive maintenance work orders in a safe and efficient manner with minimal re-work

Effectively plans and coordinates activities
Effective communication with clients to ensure that scheduled work has minimal impact on day to day operations
Keeps supervisor informed of activities, proactively addresses system issues without prompting and provides sound recommendations on current or proposed building envelop and interiors

Effectively communicates both orally and written
Demonstrate a pattern of continuous professional improvement and rapid learning through OJT and formal training

Follows proper SOPs and/or develops them as needed
Ability to effectively work with a team or alone
JAX building envelopes and interiors are well maintained and aesthetically pleasing both inside and out
Known issues are identified and reported to management


High School diploma or GED equivalency
Able to complete applicable lead and asbestos awareness and handling training
Minimum 3 years' experience working in general institutional or industrial setting performing relevant Facilities Maintenance

Proven success in working in a fast-paced working environment
Demonstrated positive attitude and professional manner in all interactions; demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development
Able to operate Windows based computers for basic administrative tasks such as email correspondence, time keeping and basic internet research
Demonstrated ability to communicate, work independently and manage multiple tasks
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License


Rotating on-call status and shift work including nights, holidays and weekends to support operational matters and projects may be necessary
Will require occasional travel to various locations for reasons such as training, project support, audits, technical meetings, factory visits, etc.
Job will require heavy labor under various environmental conditions, confined space entry, and working at heights
Other miscellaneous duties will be required based on needs of the day
