**POSITION TITLE: Research Assistant I**

**GENERAL SUMMARY**

The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine is seeking a Research Assistant I to support the laboratory of Principal Investigator Dr. J Banchereau. The Banchereau Lab utilizes advanced genomic tools, along with cell culture systems and flow cytometry, to investigate the human immune system. The successful candidate will have relevant educational and/or practical experience, and will actively participate in the laboratory's important research.

In addition to versatility within the laboratory setting, this role requires a high level of self-motivation and an ability to quickly gain new skills. The candidate must be capable of working independently as well as in a team environment.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**

* Develop high levels of specialized skill/knowledge to utilize in human immunology research - including cell isolation, cell cultures, flow cytometry, and basic genomic and proteomic methods (i.e., PCR, Western blot, etc.)
* Stay current on developments and trends within the above areas of expertise
* Identify and develop research objectives; plan and refine research methods and techniques; determine project resources and modes of data collection; learn, adopt, and troubleshoot new procedures as needed
* Perform statistical analysis; interpret and evaluate results; prepare reports and presentations; monitor and collect research data to assess accuracy, validity, and integrity
* Simultaneously manage multiple aspects of one or more projects
* Oversee technical and administrative laboratory activities - including quality control, compliance, and safety programs
* Coordinate facilities; manage and track equipment, supplies and other resources, including data and expenditures
* Interact productively with lab members and outside collaborators to enhance the operations and outcomes of the research program

**REQUIRED SKILLS**

* Proficiency across the Microsoft Office platform (specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
* Flexibility to learn and adapt to new procedures
* Excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to effectively convey ideas, present research, and contribute to reports
* In-depth knowledge of the scientific principles, methods and processes (technical and/or theoretical) used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry -- including experimental design, methods of data collection and analysis, and interpreting and reporting results
* Ability to operate instruments and scientific equipment - operational experience with a flow cytometer is a big plus
* Knowledge of related Information Technology is a plus

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**

* Bachelor's or Master's degree in biological sciences or related subjects
* At least 1-3 years' experience in a dynamic research environment
* Other means of acquiring the necessary knowledge and experience may be evaluated on a case-by-case basis
* Understands research and regulatory standards to maintain a laboratory environment
* Knowledge and ability to conduct scientific literature reviews where applicable
* Understands scientific principles to conduct research procedure in order to operate laboratory instruments and equipment
