Description: Occupational Summary

Under the direction of a Grounds Supervisor, or the Grounds Manger. Responsible for the care, maintenance and repair of all college exterior areas including lawns, trees, shrubs, athletic fields, walks, parking areas, trash collection and recycling. Must be able to endure extreme heat in the summer and cold winters. Ability to operate standard shift transmission and follow oral and written instructions required. Must be able to lift heavy objects, set up for college events.

Work Performed

Lawn care includes p lanting, trimming, spraying, mowing, weeding, fertilizing, sweeping, raking, cultivating, planting, digging, leaf removal and planting.

Athletic field care includes work on the surfaces, painting linings, moving bleachers, and other work related to preparation for athletic events.

Road, walk and parking area care includes construction patching, cleaning, of catch basin and sanding; snow and ice removal. Other duties include earth work, landscape construction (fencing and paving), policing of litter /debris and moving of furniture/heavy objects.

Prepare campus for special events and set up for events including Commencement, Reunion and Homecoming.

Operate and care for grounds maintenance equipment, including trucks and tractors.

Assist skilled trades in moving heavy equipment and materials


Basic Knowledge and Experience

Operate various types of equipment including frontend loaders, power movers, saws, sprayers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, blowers, hand pruners and pole straws

Operate light or medium weight trucks

Operate light or medium tractors and attachments used to maintain grounds as needed

Individuals with three or more years of experience in grounds work and operation of grounds equipment will be given preference

Connecticut driver's license required (class B CDL preferred).

Cooperate with other people within the department and other department personnel in competing assigned tasks

Display the necessary initiative and dependability to work alone or in groups

Perform all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with department policies and procedures

Work special events on weekends as necessary

Performs other job duties as assigned

Salary Information

Starting salary is $15.62 per hour during a 90-day probationary period. Following successful completion of probationary period, salary will increase to $19.52 per hour. Normal work hours are 730am - 4pm. Schedule will change to meet college work requirements. Union membership is required for this
