The Quality Tech II is responsible for performing specialized work of significant variety and complexity with little supervision to support the Quality Assurance Department. Technical assignments may be made and reviewed by a higher level technician or higher and may include such things as planning and lay out of work; conducting complex tests or experiments; reading and interpreting drawings and or schematics; preparing, setting up and operating test equipment; evaluating and documenting results; preparing and reviewing reports; making recommendations for change regarding ineffective procedures, designs or specifications; recommending or designing new systems, processes, product or equipment; gathering, maintaining and analyzing data from multiple sources; performing computations; plotting data; repairing/servicing instruments and equipment; testing of products; gathering and disseminating internal and external quality data; building prototype models per technical requirements; troubleshooting instruments and equipment; providing technical support for lower level technicians.


1. Executes test protocols.

2. Uses all basic mechanical and/or electrical test and measurement tools.

3. Performs technical assignments such as assembly, tests, and construction of complex equipment, parts, and products produced by Covidien.

4. Performs data analysis using custom database queries.

5. Use of custom and off the shelf computer applications for data entry and retrieval and analysis.

6. Performs standard computations and plots data.

7. Write and review detailed technical reports summarizing technical investigation or experiment findings.

8. Assist in qualification and validation of equipment, process and new and alternative components.

9. Sets up, maintains, repairs, calibrates and adjusts complex units and/or test equipment as directed.

10. Gathers and maintains accurate and timely records, samples, technical data and testing documentation.

11. Participates in planning and design of experiments or developmental projects.

12. Participates in team decision making and develops team problem solving and communication skills.

13. Stays informed about all applicable new rules, regulations and standards and is able to communicate these to other technicians.

14. Demonstrates skill in the use and care of all tools and equipment. Responsible for ensuring bench equipment calibration is up to date.

15. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of Quality System Regulations and all other applicable skills.

16. Maintains a clean, safe, and orderly work area. Must be able to understand and comply with Good Manufacturing Practices, Covidien Safety Polices and 5S.

17. Assists in writing test procedures, operating procedures, local instructions, and test protocols.

18. Recognizes problem areas and brings them to the attention of the Lead or Supervisor.

19. Participates in failure analysis and investigations.

20. Assists in the selection of new equipment.

21. Excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills with other technicians and various suport groups including engineering and management.

22. Detail oriented when performing complex tasks.

23. Demonstrates the ability to communicate with internal and external customers in a professional manner.

24. Demonstrates superior workmanship, quantity, and quality in all work areas.

25. Proven ability to lead technical projects and events.

26. Participates in team discussions, decision making, and team development.

27. Ability to champion new ideas to drive improvements.

28. Practices time management and completes assignments.

29. Trains other personnel and assists Area Lead in tracking/training certification programs. Responsible for completing personal training requirements on time.

30. May attend meetings to support area, projects, and product changes.

31. Provides technical support to other department staff members.

32. Provides consultation services in technical matters for engineering and other technical personnel outside of the department.

33. Follows all safety procedures.

Education required:HS Diploma or equivalent

Preferred: AS in electronics, military or college credit equivalence required. Related work experience may be used in substitute.

Experience: Greater than five (5) years of technical/closely related experience.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

1. Knowledge of standard technical procedures.

2. Knowledge of basic theory of scientific or technical discipline and ability to understand technical drawings and verbal direction.

3. Skill in technical measurement using standard laboratory tools, such as DVM, oscilloscope, etc.

4. Computer skills - Proficient understanding of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Outlook.

5. Proficient record keeping skills and ability to keep neat and accurate laboratory notebooks.

6. Ability to speak, read and write English; understand and communicate simple written or oral instructions in English. Make grammatical corrections to technical reports and notes.

7. Effective manual dexterity and eye hand coordination.

Skills/Competencies: 1. Ability to interpret displayed results on laboratory instruments.

2. Ability to review and analyze engineering reports.

3. Ability to review and analyze data and provide feedback to Engineering and Management.
