Tool Designer

Position Description

The Tool Designer develops manufacturing tooling and equipment through the application of engineering fundamentals, applied research, and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles. You will develop and implement manufacturing process and tooling improvements to increase production yields and improve manufacturing throughput. You will also lead complex projects independently with minimal supervision as well as support R&D and sustaining engineering projects with tool concept development and design.

Duties & Responsibilities

* Research, develop and implement improvements to manufacturing tooling and equipment to improve product quality, increase throughput and reduce process variability. Evaluate semi and full automation, as appropriate.

* Construct tool user requirements based on facility, safety, throughput and maintenance requirements.

* Investigate off-the-shelf tooling solutions and evaluate appropriateness for use versus custom tooling including performance, lead time and cost analyses.

* Design, fabricate and evaluate manufacturing and inspection tooling. Perform Tool Qualification as needed. Establish documentation to support implementation of new tooling in production.

* Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineers on new or modified tooling, equipment and associated processes.

* Support Manufacturing Engineering with Process Validation, and Product/Process Performance Qualification activities in compliance with the Quality Management System.

* Review Operations metrics with management and prioritize tool development projects to address quality issues and meet throughput demands, i.e., reduce scrap and minimize risk of manufacturing errors.

* Support R&D projects with tool design. Participate in the development of next generation jet engine components, providing input on manufacturing tooling and equipment requirements, developing concepts and preparing the manufacturing area for pilot production activities.


* BS in Mechanical Engineering and/or at least 3-5 years of successful experience in Manufacturing Engineering equivalency. In the design of repair tooling, gages, assembly/ disassembly fixtures and knowledge of Government Drawing Standards for Support Equipment tooling related to Jet engine Depot requirements is preferred.

* Unigraphics/NX or 3D modeling experience.

* Ability to program ladder logic and standard machine/process control software

* Expertise in relevant materials and manufacturing process techniques.

* DFM, DOE experience with understanding of statistical analysis methods, Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing principles.

* Expertise in methods of product and process development.
