The Manager, Medical Writing (Publication Focus) is responsible for preparing documents that support the presentation and publication needs of assigned therapeutic areas and/or products in theMedtronic Scientific Communications group. Additionally, the Manager, Medical Writing will manage other Medical Writers in the Scientific Communications group.


+ Support dissemination of scientific evidence:

+ Writing, editing, and reviewing scientific documents (e.g., manuscripts, abstracts, presentations)

+ Writing, editing, and reviewing regulatory documents (e.g., protocols, clinical study reports, clinical summaries)

+ Work closely with publication managers and RD/pre-clinical/clinical teams to execute timely completion of deliverables in accordance with company policies

+ Work with publication managers and clinical teams to develop study-specific publication plans

+ Work with external investigators to ensure their compliance with company publication policies and authorship guidelines

+ Support initiatives of the Scientific Communications team:

+ Support activities at scientific conferences

+ Serve as a subject matter expert on assigned projects

+ Maintain records and databases for team organization and metrics

+ Keep abreast of developments in areas of interest to the company, and participate in literature monitoring of company and competitor products

+ Represent the Scientific Communications team at leadership meetings, as needed

+ Work closely with cross-functional teams to anticipate business needs and offer timely support and solutions

+ Management

+ Direct management of Medical Writers

+ Establish performance goals, provide counseling, coaching, feedback, recognition, training, mentoring, and development of direct reports

+ Work with other managers/directors in the Scientific Communications group to align the group's strategy and initiatives across the business

+ Coordinate activities and goals with the Medical Affairs leadership team

+ May include:

+ Up to 10% travel:

+ Conferences

+ Educational seminars

+ Participation on work streams and process improvement initiatives

+ Other responsibilities within Scientific Communications, as assigned


_Education required/ preferred:_

PhD or PharmD


BS, BPharm, or MS, plus 7 years of relevant experience

_Preferred Experience:_

5+ years relevant experience

_Preferred Skills/Qualifications:_

Medical writing experience with industry. Experience in medical device and/or pharmaceutical industry. Knowledge of international regulations for clinical studies.


+ Demonstrated scientific writing ability

+ Strong communication/presentation skills

+ Promotes team alignment on cross-functional teams, and provides leadership and strategic direction

+ Excellent organizational skills

+ Expert understanding of scientific or clinical research and the scientific method

+ Ability to critically analyze and interpret scientific data

+ Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Adobe software (Photoshop, Illustrator), and EndNote Reference Software

+ Adept in performing literature searches in Pubmed and other relevant platforms

+ Understanding of statistical methods

+ Attention to detail

+ Knowledgeable in current industry policies, practices, technology, information, and trends impacting the organization

+ Can proactively and independently communicate throughout the organization

+ Ability to anticipate future trends and propose potential strategies/resolutions in a fast-paced working environment

+ Makes effective decisions with little supervision

+ Able to identify problems and propose potential solutions

+ Ability to independently coordinate and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously

+ Comfortable facing adversity and debating issues to reach objective resolutions

+ Able to identify and lead departmental initiatives


+ Position reports directly to Scientific Communications Director

+ This position will work closely with all levels of the Clinical Affairs department as well as other departments including RD, Pre-Clinical, Biostatistics, Regulatory, Legal, and Marketing. **WORKING CONDITIONS:**
