Aetna's Data Science team is focused on delivering strategically-impactful products to our internal customers, by building analytically-based solutions that integrate a wide range of internal and external large datasets within a cutting-edge Hadoop parallel-processing environment. We are currently seeking an Senior Data Scientist in our Wellesley, MA (Boston area) or New York, NY location.

Position Summary: Position will report to the Senior Director within Aetna's growing Data Science organization. Ideal career path for individual with demonstrated leadership competencies and desire to be promoted to Director level role within Data Science organization.

Well positioned at the intersection of data analytics and machine learning to take on some of the most challenging and interesting projects in cost containment initiatives across the enterprise. You will work with colleagues who have a passion for " Big Data" and seek to learn and improve daily.

Managing and mentoring a team of analytics professionals from a technical and business perspective for highly complex projects involving multiple resources and tasks. Provides strategic leadership for the development, validation and delivery of algorithms, statistical models and reporting tools.

Working in a collaborative and performance driven, fast paced environment you will be expected to embrace best practices and methodologies from both a technical and business perspective.

Building predictive models from scratch using both traditional statistical methods and modern machine learning techniques. Will research and implement novel machine learning algorithms.

Be required to solve challenging data science problems with specific business requirements. Effectively translate the data science in to actionable insights that can be used to influence business strategy and data-driven decision making across the enterprise.

Fundamental Components:

* Leads development and execution of new and/or machine learning complex algorithms and statistical predictive models and determines analytical approaches and modeling techniques to evaluate scenarios and potential future outcomes.

* Establishes analytical rigor and statistical methods to analyze large amounts of data, using advanced statistical techniques and mathematical analyses.

* Manages highly complex analytical projects from data exploration, model building, performance evaluation and testing.

* Provides thought leadership and direction for analytic solutions, tools and studies.

* Provides guidance to develop enterprise-wide analytics strategy and roadmap.


* 8 or more years of actuarial experience demonstrating increased responsibilities with at least 2 years in Reserving.

* Experience in SQL and another programming language.

* Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and negotiate across the business and in the external health care environment.

* Demonstrated ability to communicate technical ideas and results to non-technical clients in written and verbal form.

* Comprehensive knowledge of health care industry, products, systems, business strategies and products.

* Experience in predictive modeling preferred.

* Strong organizational, management and leadership skills.

* Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.


* Bachelor's degree minimum in related discipline; Master's Degree preferred.
