Job Summary

VA Connecticut Healthcare System was
officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New
England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a
Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full
range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned
research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute,
tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical
medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and
extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and
specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six
community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

DutiesMajor Duties

The incumbent is a Working Leader who leads any or all of
the assigned employees including Carpenters, Painters, Locksmiths and
Maintenance Mechanics for any specified time frame, dependent upon the type of
construction project to be accomplished. Duties include but are not limited to:

??Responsible for schedule all training for shop
employees and to maintain individual training records for assigned employees
according to policy and procedures.

??Works independently with a minimum of supervision
in determining the work assignment and practices of the Shop, within the
guidelines of policy and regulation.

??Works closely with all new installations,
in-house projects, inspection and review of project blueprints, inspection of
contractor submittals and review of new equipment and material submitted by

??Responsible for routine tasks which include
checking inventory of shop supplies and materials to ensure that proper quantity
is on hand at all times including ordering needed equipment, parts and supplies
to complete repairs.

??Planning methods and materials to be used in
construction activities and determining manpower requirements.

??Performs rough and finished carpentry work
necessary for building construction, repair or alterations of any structure at
the Medical Center.

??May be required to perform as backup for
locksmith duties, such as changing locks and combination lock cores.

??Incumbent repairs and installs door closer,
hinges, checking cylinders and door latches.

Your background must demonstrate experience in a
variety of carpentry work duties, such as repairing doors, windows, floors,
cabinets, drywall patching, and painting; Skilled in using tapes, rulers, and
squares accurately; Ability to interpret complex instructions, sketches,
blueprints and building codes.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the
prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the
on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least
the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further
rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The
potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the
questions. The screen-out element for this position is Ability to do the job of a Maintenance Mechanic Leader
under normal supervision.

Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out
element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

1.Experience and skills as a Lead Carpenter Maintenance

2.Experience and ability to assemble, install, maintain,
fabricate or repair a wide variety of building components.

3.Experience interpreting complex carpentry instructions,
sketches, and blueprints.

4.Experience in
the use and maintenance of hand and power tools (Carpentry).

5. Experience in other trades, i.e., electrical, HVAC, etc.



Effort / Requirements:
Incumbent very often lifts weights of approximately 45 lbs. and at times 75 lbs. to 100 lbs. The work requires standing, stooping, kneeling and climbing.

Incumbent performs work inside and outside in dusty, dirty locations at extreme ambient temperatures, in inclement and fair weathers, in confined spaces and noisy environments. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, abrasions and bruises. Incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and hard-to-reach places.
