Under the direction of the UConn Vice Provost for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer and in collaboration with the UCH Deans of the Medical and Dental Schools, the Faculty Instructional Technology Services (FITS) Director serves as the conduit for Central IT technology service offerings to UConn Health. The Director serves as the primary advocate to Central IT to ensure that the needs of community are met and infrastructure and other requirements are communicated and handled appropriately and in a timely manner. Coordinates with the UCH Academic IT Project Manager.

The FITS Director leads and directs the staff, finances and operations of the department to provide a wide range of academic IT design and support. In addition, the Director directs and participates in high-level technology assessment, program planning and reporting for the University of Connecticut. The Director maintains budget and staffing levels appropriate for activities. The Director attends conferences and training, and interacts with external peers as required to maintain knowledge of current issues and best practices.

Job Duties

UITS Liaison

* Ensure that all academic University IT initiatives are met at UConn Health. Locally provided services will continue to be under the purview of individual Deans/Directors.

* Be both the first line of defense when there is a crisis and the permanent line of communication for the overall needs of the department(s)/unit(s) being supported.

* Function as a bridge between the SOM and SODM units and Central IT. Ensure that information relating to new initiatives as proposed by a department/unit is shared with Central IT and correspondingly, once a new piece of infrastructure is put in place ensure that information is communicated back to the individual department(s)/unit(s) being supported.

* Evaluate the needs of supported units and work with Central IT to develop plans to provide services. Under rare circumstances, provide service and support for specific technology needs that are unique to the units at UConn Health or for technical needs that cannot be handled centrally.


* Direct the staff that serves as the primary, secondary and tertiary level support for technical issues.

* Ensure that all SOM/SODM technology needs for the campus are met within the guidelines of existing Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and published expectations.

* Represent the FITS Department in University-wide management level IT Governance committees.

* Work in concert with Central IT to manage any department(s)/unit(s) specific service delivery needs such as desktop management, network support, incident response, security, or other infrastructure needs.

* Support ongoing design and upgrade of smart classrooms and auditoria technology.

* Support faculty in the use of educational technology, lecture content animations, online images, assessments etc.

* Advance new and ongoing educational technology initiatives.

* Represent UConn at the national level in issues related to educational technology.

* Devise strategies for making technology accessible, understandable and appealing to faculty and students.


* Manage FITS staff activities. Identify staffing needs and direct all personnel functions.

* Work with key stakeholders to provide oversight and leadership for educational technology decisions for UConn Health.

* Facilitate communication between staff, management, vendors, and other technology resources within the organization.

* Provide technical leadership and training to FITS staff.

* Develop and maintain established departmental budget. Prepare budget requests as part of overall budget planning process.

* Collaborate with academic & research IT units as appropriate and possible.

* Prepare reports, plans, communications and recommendations as required.

* Serve as the departmental representative to appropriate UConn/UCH working groups.

* Actively participate in local and national professional organizations and user groups; maintain up-to-date knowledge of information technology, industry standards and trends.

* Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management of Information Systems, or a closely related discipline.

* Five to ten years of progressively responsible experience in an IT Operations-related field.

* Demonstrated project management experience

* Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.

* Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships at all levels.

* Experience directly managing technologies, staff, vendors and budget in support of computing infrastructure.

* Demonstrated ability to work well with people, to organize workloads, to handle difficult problems, work well under stress, and to develop complex plans and strategies.

* Extremely high level of motivation, independence, leadership, and responsibility.

* Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Advanced technical or business degree.

* Direct management or operational experience in educational technology.

* Experience with instructional design.

* Video production/studio experience.

* Experience with collaboration and web/video conferencing tools (i.e. WebEx, Cisco, Skype)

* Experience in higher education environment.

* Experience with education software such as or similar to Blackboard e-learning system.

SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

Position requries some travel between Farmington and Storrs
