Chief Electrician

Job Description Summary

This is a skilled trade position located at a facility or campus to provide commercial/industrial electrical maintenance, repair, installation, operation, and support. This position may supervises electricians. Plan, direct, instruct, check and perform work of group and contractors engaged in various complex electrical installations and maintenance of plant equipment and apparatus while practicing and complying with environmental, health and safety directions and procedures.

Job Description


* Maintains and repairs electrical systems and conduct preventive maintenance.

* Plans details of working procedure by determining replacement needs or new material required and develops a logical approach to correct the problem.

* Maintains electrical systems by completing preventive maintenance requirements; diagnosing malfunctioning apparatus; installing wiring, circuits, parts, and components; programming automated equipment, etc.

* Checks and updates systems as needed including circuit breakers, appliances, equipment, and related systems.

* Installs efficient systems and equipment and works with specialists, engineers and contractors.

* Identifies, diagnoses, and repairs all electrical problems

* Reads electrical blueprints, works with wires, connectors, and testing equipment.

* Performs all work in compliance with state and local building codes

* Follow instructions working from complex blueprints, diagrams and service manuals; direct and assign group to various tasks.

* Upgrade electrical prints and maintain records of any changes in electrical distribution and addition of major equipment and upgrading of electrical feeders and vaults.

* Order material and maintain all min/max inventory for the Maintenance Storeroom.

* Review prints on new and/or existing electrical projects and make suggestions for changes that may be required.

* Review equipment records to determine recurring trouble, failures and suggest corrective action.

* When directing contractors, review quality of work and ensure all company contract and national electric code requirements are followed.

* Use and advise on the operation of electrical and electronic test equipment to determine failures and troubleshoot.

* Plan, perform and direct a variety of predictive & preventative maintenance on power distribution switch-gear transformers in vaults and substations, fire alarms, public address system, security systems, emergency generators, UPS devices, and associated Vault DC systems.

* Respond to electrical problems of various complexities and voltages.

* Manage BIG Center queue for electrical tasks (PM, PDM, PMG & On-demand).

* Provide technical support for the following:

* Coordination study and arc flash labeling initiatives.

* Medium / high voltage breaker overhaul program.

* High voltage feeder replacement program.

* Campus Services high speed communications installation.

* High voltage transformer replacements.

* Electrical metering / sub-metering installation

* Electrical metering data management / trouble alert system

* Performs other work as assigned.


* Minimum of 2 to 4 years experience performing electrical servicing and repairs in commercial, industrial, or residential facilities. Some supervisory experience is a plus.

* Experience with various systems including but not limited to hydraulic, pneumatic, plc controls, various electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire, life safety, energy, and some welding is a plus.

* Experience with conduit, pulling wire and repairing electrical systems is important. High Voltage experience is a plus. Experience using High Voltage Electric splicing boxes is beneficial, however not mandatory. Experience making electrical terminations is helpful but not mandatory.

* Understanding of related building and regulatory codes is essential.

* Must have all applicable licenses and certifications, as required.

* Must be reliable, self-motivated, have the ability and knowledge to read electrical blueprints.

* Must possess good communication skills and be able to maintain a safe work area.


* While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to travel from floor to floor and may be required to travel outside between buildings in varying outdoor weather conditions.

* The employee may also be regularly required to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time; regularly use hands to operate office machinery including, but not limited to, telephones, computers, fax, and photocopy machines; regularly required to walk, talk, and hear.
