Position Description

Position Title: 9-12 Instructional Coach/Support Teacher

Department: Department and/or School Specific

Reports to: High School Principal

Works with: Administration, Teachers, Students


The Instructional Coach is a teacher who has both content and instructional expertise in all content areas, most specifically in the areas of reading, writing, and math. The primary responsibilities of this position include facilitating the District's professional development model by demonstrating lessons and coaching teachers one-on-one. The Instructional Coach focuses on enhancing teacher ability to provide instruction that: builds student understanding and skills; is academically rigorous; addresses the curriculum standards and frameworks; and enhances student sense of engagement and ownership of learning. The Instructional Coach works collaboratively with other instructional leaders to improve student achievement. The Instructional Coach will also work directly with students in need of support.

Performance Responsibilities:

* Implement a collaborative coaching and learning approach.

* Model effective, differentiated instruction.

* Provide individualized, classroom-based coaching with participants to support them in implementing good instructional practices.

* Facilitate grade-level teams among teachers in which issues related to implementing effective content, skills and problem solving instruction are considered, current research and writing on effective practice is read and discussed, and student work and data are reviewed.

* Provide comprehensive/balanced training in and across given subject areas and curricular areas.

* Instruct students in need of additional support.

* Provide reading intervention with struggling learners.


* Valid Connecticut Teacher Certification in content area 7-12; Master's degree required; 097 Certificate strongly preferred.

* Minimum of 5 years successful teaching experience.

* Demonstrated knowledge of state and national standards.

* Deep knowledge of reading, writing, literacy development, and math.

* Previous coaching or teacher leadership experience.

* Extensive knowledge of and experience in:

1. Content

2. Instructional strategies

3. Assessment driven instruction (teaching/learning process).

* Effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills for building an environment with a common instructional focus.

* Ability to model lessons demonstrating best practice instruction.

* Ability to support teachers in development of differentiated lessons.

* Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills.

* Demonstrated ability to communicate in a professional manner both orally and in writing.

* Demonstrated strength in organization, communication skills and efficiency in meeting deadlines.

* Experience in analyzing data to plan for instruction.

* Demonstrated ability to function as positive collaborative member of a team.

* Demonstrated interest and engagement in professional learning and reflection.
