Reporting to the VP of R&D, this Sr. Director of R&D position will be responsible for driving the strategic plan for research and development for the Stapling division within Surgical Innovations. Work will involve analyzing current needs and future opportunities in surgery in general, and relevant specialties in particular. Current primary focus areas include Open Stapling, Endo Stapling and related and evolving technologies in surgery. The person in this role will be responsible for a portfolio of projects, including ownership of activities contracted to the R&D sites and third parties.

This position will be based in North Haven, CT.


* Accountable for R&D portfolio creation and delivery for the Stapling in the AST division

* Working with Site R&D and other functions to evolve product & technology strategy

* Pipeline management : primary R&D contact to Strategy & Portfolio, BD&L, Marketing

* Delivering on new product revenue expectations to meet business strategy

* Technical counsel on strategy for COTs

* R&D Pipeline (including product, technology, procedural roadmaps)

* R&D Budget responsibility in relevant classes of trades

* Developing and managing a platform strategy and activity map reflecting current and future R&D efforts to drive the growth for the platform.

* Analyzing current needs and future opportunities regarding the utilization of devices in surgery.

* Responsible for synthesizing Voice of the Customer to drive organic and inorganic growth

* Attracting, developing and retaining a high performance technical staff; Coaching, motivating and fostering professional development of direct reports.

* Participating with senior management in developing strategic organizational goals and objectives.

* Scope of work includes: customers, pre-concept activities, site interaction for PD and pre-PD activities

* Managing research and concept generation addressing unmet customer needs within core platform using established and nascent technologies.

* Serving as technical lead on advising and evaluating organic and inorganic growth opportunities

* Demonstrating an understanding of functional and customer requirements. Creating and managing project contracts with R&D Sites.

* Ensuring R&D team members are managing activities within their function and managing project milestones.

* Partner with legal on coordinating state of art searches, patent disclosures and product clearances.

* Meeting or exceeding financial objectives by preparing an annual budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances and initiating corrective actions.

* Presenting vision of technology for the division to internal and external audiences as appropriate.

* Recommending and implementing productivity gains.

* Adhering to safety policy procedures.


BS Engineering or Science required. MS highly desired. MBA or PhD preferred


Minimum of 15 years relevant experience.

At least 10 years of research and development experience in the Medical Device field.

At least 5 years of supervisory experience managing product and/or technology development.


* Demonstrated proficiency in innovation management and resource planning.

* Demonstrated understanding and application of financial planning and analysis.

* Thorough understanding of market dynamics in area of expertise including competitive advantage, procedures, new markets and technologies.

Reports to Vice President, R&D. Manages up to 10 exempt level technical reports. Will have employees (direct or dotted line) in multiple geographies. Interacts cross functionally both internal and external to the company to achieve divisional and BU goals. Significant contact with external customers (clinical and economic decision makers) and internal customers (Marketing, R&D sites in Shanghai and Boulder, Strategy Portfolio / BD&L and Clinical/Medical Affairs). Interact with division and business unit leaders, customers, clinical leaders, technical researchers and business development target companies.

Active involvement in divisional Portfolio Management Team (PMT), North Haven and Shanghai Site Product Decision Team (PDT) and Surgical Innovations Technology Review Board (TRB). Close collaboration with relevant NPD site leadership.

Budget: In collaboration with sites, manage the divisional R&D expense and capital budgets in the range of $50+ million
