Consumer Reports ("CR") is an independent, nonprofit organization that works side by side with consumers to create a fairer, safer, and healthier world.

We are currently seeking a Vice President & General Counsel ("GC") to direct the organization's legal affairs. Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the GC will represent CR and its affiliates in all legal matters, and provide counsel to the President, Board of Directors, and leadership team members.

+ Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited U.S. law school, and must also, at the time of hire and throughout his or her employment as Vice President & General Counsel at CR, be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar.

+ Candidate should have at least 15 years of experience - preferably with more than 8 years as an in-house general counsel or senior counsel.

+ Experience required in areas of not-for-profit governance, not-for-profit law, intellectual property, media law, commercial law, publishing, and labor relations.

+ Extensive experience dealing with business clients and boards of directors in the not-for-profit context is required.

+ Excellent written and oral communication skills.

+ Candidate should be well-versed in defamation and First Amendment law (applicable to editorial as well as marketing content).

+ Either substantial litigation experience and/or transactional law experience is needed. Privacy law and consumer law will be a plus.

+ Managerial experience supervising other attorneys and non-attorney staff is required, as well as experience managing outside counsel.

+ Prior advocacy/public policy experience will be a plus.

+ Serve as management liaison to the Board of Directors and its committees, with primary responsibility for coordinating and organizing the work of the Board and its committees in collaboration with the President, other leadership team members and support staff.

+ Direct the defense of the organization against lawsuits or other claims, including audits or investigations, and prosecute the organization's claims against others.

+ Strike a balance between protecting CR from unnecessary lawsuits and CR's commitment to uncover and report factual information that educates and protects consumers.

+ Oversee the legal aspects of organizational transactions.

+ Work closely with Human Resources to manage the process of labor negotiations and advise the President and the Board of Directors regarding all labor relations matters.

+ Successfully manages multiple projects simultaneously across a diverse range of legal subject areas.
