The Legal Assistant contributes to the successful operation of the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) by performing a variety of legal and administrative duties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Reviews and drafts routine contracts under the supervision of the department's attorneys. • Organizes contracts and enters them into the department's Contracts Management System; runs analytical reports, and retrieves information and documents from the system as needed. • Develops, implements and maintains a docket control system to facilitate the management and analysis of legal and regulatory proceedings. • Working with the Registrar, SDCL, Human Resources, other administrative departments and lawyers in the OGC, handles routine subpoenas and requests for student and associate records from litigants and government agencies. • When directed to do so, prepares, circulates and tracks litigation hold notices to ensure the preservation of records potentially needed for legal proceedings. • Assists in updating various policy documents and required disclosures. • Assists with maintenance of the Compliance Calendar. • Assists the General Counsel with various departmental administrative duties. • Shares responsibility for departmental analytics and reporting of key data through Campus Labs. • Provides support, as needed, for departmental initiatives including but not limited to Title IX, the ADA, complaint handling, records management, compliance awareness and internal communications. • Participates in relevant conferences and professional development activities. • Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements Qualifications/Requirements: • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field required; Master's degree preferred. • Minimum of two years of professional experience as a legal assistant or legal administrator in a corporation or law firm required; some significant exposure to higher education preferred. • Computer literacy required, including knowledge of major applications (Office 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.) and experience managing databases. • Strong organizational, managerial, and interpersonal skills, together with the ability to multi-task effectively with minimal supervision. • Strong written and oral communication skills. • Legal research skills. • Some exposure to project management, Title IX, the ADA, and/or records management preferred. • Valid driver's license and access to a car.
