Turbine Equipment Design Manager Location: Newington, Connecticut. Salary $100,000 -250,000K base. TITLE Design Engineering Manager The Company is a privately-held manufacturer of custom-designed, highly engineered capital equipment and systems that are sold to a wide variety of industrial customers, including: aerospace, industrial, petrochemical and process industries, and general manufacturing companies. Founded about 70 years ago, the company is a recognized global leader in the development of pneumatic, hydraulic, and electronic equipment. The company sells its products throughout the world direct and through local representatives. The company is seeking a Design Engineering Manager to assume technical responsibilities for one of the three businesses which is part of the corporate group, specifically the Heavy Equipment business. This group specializes exclusively in HD rotating equipment. They pioneered the design concept of their specialized portable equipment utilized worldwide. Since then, significant advances have been continuously incorporated, particularly in the areas of higher operating speeds, easier- to-use designs, improved materials, and increasingly sophisticated computer-interfaced, closed-loop controls. The result has been a widely acknowledged leadership in product performance and reliability. With a product line of over 50 standard models and a large number of special purpose designs, our company is the only American-owned manufacturer producing a complete offering of our niche equipment. RELATIONSHIP AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Design Engineering Manager will lead the design engineering activities necessary to design, develop, build and sell products based on customer defined requirements. In this capacity, he/she will report directly to the business segment Chief under close mentoring of the VP of Engineering. The Design Engineering manager will take a direct, hands-on approach in designing and modifying components and systems that comprise the product line. He/she will interact directly with customers at all levels in their organizations supporting the sale and commissioning of product or the resolution of technical issues. The Design Engineering Manager will apply commercial market knowledge to identify opportunities and expand future business. He/she will lead and motivate team members to perform with excellence against high standards, applying sound management practices to attract, retain, develop, and inspire staff while managing core technical responsibilities in machinery design. Specific job duties and responsibilities: • Develop technically sound designs, which meet performance requirements, good engineering practices and solve the customer's needs and/or problems. • Serve as a primary technical expert on equipment technology and product performance. • Collaborate with and provide support to the purchasing and manufacturing functions to ensure that the selection of materials and the fabrication of components meet or exceed product quality and performance standards. • Build relationships with key customers (and potential customers) in order to drive sales, enhance service, and develop new products or refine existing products. • On an on-going basis, supervise the direct-reporting staff, directing and motivating, as needed, to attain optimal performance and high morale. • Think continuously of ways in which return can be maximized, without sacrificing product quality and market opportunities • Maintain awareness of current state-of-the-art technologies and trends in mechanical engineering and machine design to identify product improvement concepts and ideas. • Manage design and development projects to meet all established goals and objectives. EDUCATION Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field is required. An advanced technical or business degree is highly desirable. EXPERIENCE • Possesses a minimum of 10 years of related experience combined with assignments in design and/or project engineering, • Direct experience in machine design - preferably in the design of rotating machinery, such as gas turbines, water pumps, diesel and gasoline engines, air compressors, gearboxes, machine tools or electric motors. • Hands-on experience in establishing design concepts, preparing design sketches, marking up design layouts, establishing dimensional tolerances, selecting materials, performing stress analysis, and reviewing detailed parts drawings. • Familiar with castings, forgings and welded structures and with machinery components such as ball bearings and various types of shaft seals. He or she should also understand the concepts of vibration, critical speeds and dynamic balancing.
